Crane & Carry was originally founded by Kevin and Mike Mackley around 2010, following the sale of their successful transport and logistics company. What started as a dream to build Canterbury's biggest crane truck quickly became a new chapter Crane & Carry was born. Built on strong relationships, old-school work ethic, and a "roll up your sleeves" attitude, the business quickly grew. One truck became two, then three, and soon a fleet of five Hiab trucks was servicing customers right across the South Island. Their focus was simple: have the right gear, do a proper job, and always look after the people they worked with.
Over that same time, I (Shane Fendall) was working in a successful, locally owned transport company, spending over 15 years learning the ins and outs of the industry. I had the opportunity to work on everything from large-scale freight movements to one-off specialist projects, and along the way I built the relationships, knowledge, and the confidence to eventually step out on my own.
In 2024, conversations started with both Kevin Mackley and Grant Hanham about what the future could look like. Grant had built Hanham Transport into a well-respected specialist transport operator in the flatdeck and over-dimensional market over the past 45years, and the timing was right to start talking.
By early-mid 2025, I was lucky enough to complete the purchase of key assets from both businesses - combining Hanham Transport's specialist trailers and long-load expertise with Crane & Carry's Hiab gear and experienced operators.
What you see today is the next chapter in that story. A modern fleet, specialist gear, and a continued focus on doing it properly - with the right team, the right tools, and a reputation we're proud to carry forward.
